Hello everyone! It’s Hayley here for this week’s blog and I would like to extend a special welcome to our new University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) graduates who may be reading this!
Last Friday, the DARO was delighted to travel down to Shrewsbury for the UCS inaugural graduation. We were on hand in Guildhall to gift each graduand with one of our Pioneer Pins and congratulate them on their achievement!
Darwin the Shrewsbury Bear also made an appearance…
And we were thrilled to see our graduands proudly wearing their Pioneer Pins, ready for the graduation ceremony!
At 2pm, academics and civic dignitaries processed through the historical streets of Shrewsbury, before the ceremony began at 3pm…
Earlier in the morning, there was also a very special dedication of the Courtyard Garden to the memory of Jurij Kmito. Staff and graduands gathered to remember Jurij, and a special memorial plaque was unveiled in his memory.
The graduation ceremony itself was hosted in the iconic St. Chad’s Church. Friends, family and staff gathered to celebrate the very first cohort of UCS students receiving their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees/awards.
The awards were presented by Chancellor of the University of Chester, Dr Gyles Brandreth…
Postgraduate students started their courses at UCS in 2014, while undergraduate students were welcomed in 2015. The undergraduate students graduated in a variety of subjects, including: History; English; Initial Teacher Education; Psychology; Business and a range of Science programmes. Postgraduate awards were also received in areas from Education to Health.
During the ceremony, graduate Arwel John (BSc Genetics and Evolution) gave a speech remembering his time at UCS and looking towards the future.
The celebrations concluded with a special parachute display from the Silver Stars Army Parachute Display Team and a special graduation High Tea for the new graduates in St. Mary’s Church, alongside their friends, family and UCS academic staff.
Here in the DARO, we would like to wish our pioneer UCS graduates all the best for the future! Keep in touch and let us know where your next steps take you – we would love to hear from you!
Don’t forget to register and update your details with the DARO here.
Congratulations!
