Whether mental health has been something you’ve struggled with before coming to university, or it’s become an issue since then, we really want you to know that not only is it important to talk about it, we have the services and resources in place to help you do that. There are five times more reports of ill mental health on campuses across the UK now than there were in 2010 (Office for Students), and we are all for making it the norm to talk about mental health.

So, here are a few of the things we offer to our students, just in case you need them at the moment, or in the future.

Big White Wall

The University of Chester is a member of Big White Wall, a 24/7 online service that offers support to people suffering from depression, anxiety and other common mental health issues. This platform combines professional support (from experienced clinicians who are online at all times) with the power of peer-to-peer support to create a safe environment to talk openly. Big White Wall is anonymous to allow users to express themselves without feeling exposed or vulnerable, and it’s also moderated, to make sure the space is being used as it should be. The service offers self-assessments, creative tools to help express how you’re feeling, a wide range of self-guided courses to do at your own pace and recommends resources designed to help.

Face-to-Face Support

The Wellbeing and Mental Health team within Student Futures offer information, advice and guidance on a wide range of issues. You can find examples of the sorts of things they can help with on their dedicated pages, but even if what you’d like to talk about isn’t there, you can still get in touch with them. You can call 01244 511550 or email wellbeing@chester.ac.uk for advice, or to make a telephone or face-to-face appointment with a Wellbeing Adviser.

Our Student Counselling service is available to all students across the University. This offers an opportunity to talk about worries you may have, and a chance to learn new skills to support yourself. Our counsellors all work within the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) Ethical Framework. If you’re not too sure whether or not counselling is right for you, we suggest contacting student.counselling@chester.ac.uk to get a bit more information.

University App

Our University of Chester app has a Support section with lots of information, advice and suggestions for where you can get more support on the following:

  • Anxious thoughts
  • Low mood
  • Stress and worry
  • Homesickness
  • Sleep issues
  • Time management
  • Isolation and loneliness
  • Culture shock

If you’re struggling with any of these things, just take a few minutes to look at the app – there may be something there that could really help you.

University Mental Health Day is all about bringing together the university community to make mental health a university-wide priority and create ongoing year-round change to the future of student mental health. We want this for our students and for Higher Education in general, so let’s make it happen.
