Here in the Department of History and Archaeology, we’re pretty passionate about archaeology, and in our 2018 National Student Survey results, 100% of BA Archaeology students at Chester were satisfied overall with their course.
However if you’re not sure what to look for in an archaeology degree course, here are our top five tips when picking the right course for you.
1. As all archaeology degree courses have to adhere to certain standards, we would recommend looking at the benchmark so you know what you can expect in an individual course.
2. See who will be teaching you, specifically their areas of specialism and the modules available. At Chester, modules cover a range of topics and periods, however we have leading research specialisms in human remains, environmental archaeology, early prehistoric, Iron Age, Roman, and early medieval archaeology, material culture, public archaeology and heritage… to name a few!
3. Look at the entry requirements, as not all archaeology departments require sciences or history. For Chester, you would need 112 UCAS points or equivalent (this roughly equates to A Level BBC/BCC).
4. Volunteering opportunities are a great way to work out if archaeology really is for you. The Council for British Archaeology website is a good place to start.
5. The ultimate archaeology taster day is University Archaeology Day. Here you will be able to meet representatives from most of the archaeology departments in UK universities and attend taster lectures, generally getting a feel for whether this might be the degree subject for you.
