As Open Day season approaches, we spoke to some of our students for their take on why Open Days matter, and how to make sure you get the most out of your visit.
Lauren Hay, English Literature (third year)
“I think when you visit an Open Day you get an immediate feel for the university and I think from then you know whether this is for you. It’s important to feel comfortable and to know that the course you’re signing up for is exactly the course you want.
“For me, the course at Chester was the one that suited me the most, and the staff and students in the Department made me feel at ease and excited about the prospect of going to study there. Not to mention that Chester is a stunning city!”
Chris Herbert, Popular Music Performance (third year)
“Firstly, don’t be nervous. Everyone is there to help you and make you feel as comfortable as possible. Secondly, be sure to ask as many questions as you need to. Open Days are all about you gaining as good an understanding of the course as possible. So if you think of something to ask, go ahead!
“A prospectus tells you general information, but the Open Day was where I really got to know my course. I got to meet current students, so I knew I could discuss the course with someone who was actually studying it.”
Germán Alemán, English Language and Education Studies (first year)
“My top tips for attending an Open Day would be to read the prospectus and Open Day programme in advance so you have a broad idea of what the course is about. Make a shortlist of the courses you are interested in, and all the questions you would like to ask.
“Ask questions about the lifestyle in the city and if you can, take a tour of the city, and even come for a weekend and see it all for yourself.”
Chloe Heery, Psychology with Biology (third year)
“An Open Day is such a great opportunity to not only see what the academic side of the university is like, but also where you could be living and the extracurricular activities you could be involved in, so try to make the most of the whole day.
“I found that the lecturers and supporting staff at Chester wanted to know and help you on a personal level and the Open Day gave me the impression that they really valued the students at the University so I felt more welcome.”
