According to a recent YouGov survey, a whopping 36% of employers in the UK have rejected job applicants based on their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn profile.  Usually, recruiters will look at candidate’s social media before they will invite you to interview, mainly to make sure that you, the candidate, will be a great fit for their company.

What employers don’t want to see….

  • Inappropriate language
  • Illegal or offensive behaviour
  • Discriminatory comments related to race, gender, religion etc
  • Information that contradicts what you have written in your application
  • Posts about a previous employer which are negative
  • Drunken photos

So, what can you do to make sure that your social media posts are ‘Job Ready’?

Use your social media to your benefit

Employers are looking for a reason to employ you.  They want to see how you will fit into the culture of their company, so show them your creativeness, your personality and a wide range of interests.  To make yourself your best asset, keep your content relevant and interesting to the industry or sector that you are applying for.  Show the employer that you have a genuine interest in your chosen field.

Screen your accounts

It is always a good idea to have an in-depth look at your social media every so often.  Scrutinise your old posts and pictures.  Are there any in there that you wouldn’t want an employer to see?  If there is, then delete the posts or pictures or at least de-tag yourself.

Make your accounts private

As you are probably aware, internet content lasts forever.  Making your accounts private will protect them from some threats, but really, nothing is truly private online.  A good idea, is to review your privacy settings, so that you will know what is visible to the public and consider this in any future activity.  You don’t have to make your account private, so if you don’t want to, just make sure that the content you post is favourable to you.

Remember, social media can be a positive asset for you whilst you are looking for jobs, so make sure that yours promotes you to be a great addition to any employer’s team!
