"This is a beautiful place to study right by the city centre. The building itself provides a great common room to sit with friends and relax, and it has a great library for any assignments, whether it’s individual or group work."

— Samantha, studying Learning Disability Nursing

Offering specialist vocational courses in health, social care and education, and law courses with excellent opportunities to gain experience, Wheeler is all about putting theory into practice.

The University took ownership of the former County Hall in Chester in 2010 and transformed it into the Wheeler building, which is just a 20-minute walk from the main learning site in Chester, Exton Park. Wheeler provides students with amazing subject-specific facilities and a practical approach to learning. Located within the lively city centre of Chester and overlooking the River Dee, it is home to most courses within the School of Education*, and the Faculty of Health and Social Care*. From September 2022, students beginning their studies at Chester Law School will be taught at Wheeler, as well as Queen's Park and Exton Park if undertaking Law alongside another subject.

* Please note that in addition to Wheeler, some Faculty courses may be based at other learning sites. The School of Education also have course locations at Exton Park and University Centre Warrington. The Faculty of Health and Social Care have course locations at University Centre Warrington, University Centre Birkenhead and University Centre Shrewsbury. Please check course pages for individual course locations.

Study and Socialise

Our on-site library houses extensive book collections for Education and Health and Social Care, journals and school-based resources, as well as computer suites and multimedia rooms that are ideal for Law students to access the Oxford University Press Law Trove, which houses all of their core texts online. Law students also have access to print resources at Seaborne Library at Exton Park, and can request print copies on a click and collect bases from the Wheeler Library. Wheeler provides a 192-seat lecture theatre, and all of the teaching spaces are equipped with high-grade audiovisual technology and provide an excellent learning experience. Our experienced team of staff work hard to help you realise your potential through a variety of teaching methods, including practice placements.

Wheeler’s café and coffee shop serves hot and cold drinks, snacks and delicious meals. Meanwhile, the student common room provides a social, group work and discussion space for students, with hot and cold drinks vending machines and snack machines available, and students are able to eat their own food here. If you feel like a bit of fresh air take a walk along the River Dee, or pop into the vibrant city centre – it’s right on your doorstep.

Our new simulation suite emulates diverse healthcare spaces, ranging from a patient’s home and community clinic settings to acute care settings, including a Triage Assessment Area, Maternity Delivery Suite, Children’s Ward and a General Ward. Patient simulators and virtual reality technology will immerse you in the learning experience, and support the development of your skill set before you enter the working world. We are also well positioned within the North West to network and collaborate with key influencers, including local NHS Trusts and Local Authorities.
