Overview
Paul Vallely is a writer and consultant on ethics & enterprise, aid & development and faith & religion. He has worked as a journalist and campaigner in newspapers and with aid agencies, government and church organisations for more than two decades. He has produced award-winning reports from more than 30 countries in the developing world. He writes on political, cultural, ethical and religious issues in The Independent, Guardian, Church Times, and Third Way.
An expert in Catholic Social Teaching, he has prepared keynote documents on The Big Society and the Common Good and on penal policy for the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales. He was seconded to the Commission for Africa set up by the British prime minister Tony Blair in 2004/5 and was co-author of its final report. He then worked with Bob Geldof on Live 8, and with Geldof and Bono lobbying the negotiators and heads of government at the Gleneagles G8 summit.
He is a former executive editor of the Independent on Sunday and leader-writer on The Independent. He has been editor of the Sunday Times News Review and of the Irish edition of the Sunday Times. He was Chair of the leading development think-tank, the Catholic Institute for International Relations (now Progressio) for six years. He was also Chair of the fair trade organisation Traidcraft and has worked with Christian Aid and Cafod.
He is now a consultant on policy and communications and an Associate at the Brooks World Poverty Institute at the University of Manchester. He is a director of The Tablet and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
