Once you have finished your course you will need to pay back any loans you have borrowed. If you’re a full-time student you’ll be due to start repaying your loan the April after you finish or leave your course.

You need to be earning over a certain amount in order to start repayments, and currently it is £25,000 a year. The amount you repay each month is linked to your income. You’ll pay 9% of any income you earn over the threshold of £25,000 a year. If your income falls below this, your repayments will automatically stop. Interest is charged on your loan from the day you make the first payment until the loan is either repaid in full or cancelled. Any loan remaining after 30 years will be cancelled.
