It stalked me on my voyage,
that slouching beast,
with claws damp with blood.
I fled from my skulking foe
across the waves, crashing to and fro,
yet it pursued, gliding on wings of snow.
Finally I tired of the chase
and so made my stand,
in this barren land,
to slay my devoted predator.
My hour came as it clawed at my chest.
The riddle exposed along with my flesh.
Recognition befell me
as the beast donned his macabre mask
and smirked back with my disembodied face.
