Fees and Funding for Postgraduate Research Degrees
Fees
Fees vary slightly from year to year, so be sure to check at the time of application for the exact cost on our Postgraduate fees web page.
The costs of typing and binding of PhD and MPhil theses, in accordance with the University's requirements, must be met by the student. There is a Postgraduate Loan for the MPhil and MRes course at Chester. Please visit the Student Finance website for further information.
Funding
A number of University of Chester research bursaries, scholarships and studentships are available each year:
- International Scholarships: Self-funding international PGR students are entitled to a £1,000 international scholarship (full time; £500 part time) as a discount off the headline fee. Sponsored students are charged the full listed fee. This applies to all PGR programmes, including Professional Doctorates.
- Studentships: These are partially- or fully-funded, full or part-time competitive studentships, covering tuition fees and sometimes include a stipend. They are available by application via Studentships and may be open to all applicants although tuition fees are only covered at the UK/EC rate, so international students are liable for the difference in fee rates. Some sponsored studentships may have additional eligibility criteria.
When applying for funding to support your study, applications should be:
- submitted as early as possible, once you have received the offer of a place
- in line with eligibility criteria - such as country of residence, qualifications, subject or mode of study
- fully completed, easy to understand, with all appropriate supporting documentation attached
- supportable by suitable referees, who should be fully informed about what is required of them
Disabilities
Full-time and part-time disabled students are eligible to apply for a Disabled Students' Allowance (DSAs) to help with the costs incurred in attending the course, as a direct result of their disability. However, these are not available to help pay for fees or living costs. For advice and guidance about DSAs, please email the Disabilities and Specific Needs Support Worker or telephone on 01244 511000.
