Research Interests

As an applied psychologist, I am especially interested in exploring and understanding issues in the various domains of the Criminal Justice System.  Recently, my research has focused on the evaluation of alternative programs in the prison system.

I have explored the usefulness of arts-based prison activities with different groups of individuals in prison, specifically considering the support that these activities provide for their criminogenic needs.  Currently I am investigating the international issue of the increasing ageing population in the Criminal Justice System.

Latest / Proudest Achievement

I was recently invited to be a keynote speaker at the 2018 International Conference on Psychology, Counselling & Education in Manilla (Philippines), where I delivered a talk entitled ‘Exploring the benefits of an innovative arts-based rehabilitation intervention for the health and wellbeing of an ageing offender population’, based on my recent paper and current project work.  Whilst in the Philippines I was interviewed by Net25 News and I recorded a podcast for the Psychreg ‘The Mental Breakdown’ series, discussing aspects of my career to date and my experience of conducting prison-based research.

I have recently set up a research group at the University of Chester focusing on Crime and Policing, if you are interested in joining or finding out more you can contact me via my email address (dean.wilkinson@chester.ac.uk) for more information.
