Research Interest

Nick is a Contextual Behavioural Scientist and his research focusses on how we can understand and improve psychological wellbeing.

His primary programme of research is in psychosocial oncology – the application of psychology in cancer and end of life care – but he also conducts research on testing and developing components of psychological therapies (such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT), LGBT psychology, coaching psychology and interventions to improve lifestyle behaviours such as exercise and healthy eating.

Latest Achievement

Nick is currently leading the BEACHeS Research Study, which is funded by Macmillan Cancer Support. BEACHeS aims to develop and pilot test an ACT-based coaching intervention for people with an incurable cancer diagnosis, who have been referred to specialist palliative care services.

The project is being run in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh and Marie Curie UK. Nick co-edited an interdisciplinary textbook, Cancer and Cancer Care, which was published by Sage in 2015.

"Referral to hospice-based care can be time of distress, worry and uncertainty for this patient group. We hope that our intervention will improve wellbeing, and that this may lead people to live more meaningfully at the end of life.”

Nick works with an international team of collaborators in the UK, Canada and Australia. He was recently appointed Associate Editor for the Journal of Psychosocial Oncology Research & Practice.
