What We Do

The Strategic Economic Development Directorate is responsible for securing external funding for the University, across all of its campuses, overseeing contractual compliance and delivery, as well as development and delivery of Graduate Apprenticeships and Health sector innovation activities. The Department is involved with both capital and revenue projects, typically focused on developing and implementing new strategic activities for the University within the economic development field.

It is the responsibility of the Department, working with the Vice-Chancellor and Senior Management Team, to ensure the University is informed of and aligned with relevant related national and international policies affecting Higher Education, including those of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and Department for Education. The Department also ensures that the University is in a strong position to help shape future agendas and lever funding for projects.

 Activities Include:

  • Funding contract management and compliance, project delivery
  • Degree Apprenticeships development and delivery
  • Project scoping development and external funding applications
  • Health and Medical Innovation developments

  • Local stakeholders, including Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership, local Councils and chambers of commerce
  • Public and private organisations, including industry bodies, SMEs, large corporates and policy setters
  • Regional, national and international funding bodies
  • Other universities and colleges

  • Health sector stakeholders


The Strategic Economic Development Directorate has helped the University to secure several areas of externally-funded activity and has introduced new streams of activity. Many of these projects go on to be delivered by other areas of the University.
