In May 2018, I taught a Year 12 class at Brine Leas School in Nantwich. I promoted the TRS department at Chester, the reason for studying RE beyond A Levels, and also introduced the students to the Dead Sea Scrolls. I began by asking the students which subjects they were thinking about studying at university, which included Law, History and Philosophy, and explained how TRS was beneficial to these different careers. I included the skills that would be learnt at university and how these were transferrable, particularly with the opportunities to convert into Law, which I believe left the students feeling inspired.

I started the lesson off with a discussion on the importance of RE and the reasons the students enjoyed studying it at A Level. The students seemed enthusiastic and enjoyed learning about the different views in the world and this is something the TRS department in Chester develops and advocates. I also discussed the importance of religious literacy in the growing secular world. The students seemed excited about the opportunities and freedoms the department at Chester offered. The size of the department and the support that was readily available seemed to be a huge pull for students thinking about studying TRS.

Not only has the TRS department been influential to my personal development it has also given me a new passion for Theology and I felt like this showed throughout my presentation. One of my main interests is the Dead Sea Scrolls and I got to introduce the students to this in my presentation. I told the class about their significance to Christianity and Judaism but also their impact on the world as a whole. The class seemed gripped to hear more about this significant archaeological find and their frequent questions highlighted their enthusiasm.

I decide to include a lot of group discussions throughout my presentation to allow the students the space to ask questions, offer their opinions, and understand the topics and areas I was exploring. The students’ engagement throughout my presentation left me feeling encouraged. Mr Cooney, the teacher who observed my lesson, also told me how engaged he thought the students were and this inspired me to continue to promote Theology and Religious Studies into the future. The Religious Education module and subsequent opportunities has provided me with a unique experience that I would not have received elsewhere. I cannot thank the TRS department enough for providing such unique module choices and continuing to inspire me into further education and research.
