Course overview

Increasing amounts of health care costs are spent on managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, cardiopulmonary disease, cancer and mental health/dementia, especially with relation to increasingly ageing populations. Future health care needs are becoming more focused on prevention in order to avoid rising costs associated with chronic conditions and related disability. Physical activity is increasingly being recognised to both prevent these key conditions and/or help people live with them, physically, socially and psychologically.

Why Study Health and Exercise Science (Shrewsbury) with us?

This course brings together many of the skills and underpinning knowledge found in more traditional courses such as physiotherapy, sports therapy and sport science. As part of this degree, you will attain nationally certified exercise professionals’ qualifications, enhancing your employability to work in public health, the fitness industry and/or clinical settings come graduation.  Over your three years, the knowledge and skills you develop focus on learning to help people to reduce their risk of common diseases through physical activity, and how to live more actively with more prominent health conditions (cardio-metabolic, muscle and movement disorders).

The practical and clinical placement elements of the course are linked with “exercise referral” initiatives and secondary prevention programmes, which are increasingly being required to keep people from returning to hospital following their early acute phases of treatment and rehabilitation.

This course allows students to attain National Occupational Standards Qualifications in:

  • Exercise Instruction (Skills Active L2)

  • Personal Training (Skills Active L3)

  • Advanced Exercise Instruction in Clinical Populations (Skills Active L4)

University Centre Shrewsbury

The University of Chester and Shropshire Council have established University Centre Shrewsbury to increase your Higher Education prospects and offer a student experience shaped to you.

Since welcoming our first cohort in 2015, we have strived to offer students a well-rounded and supportive university experience within the beautiful medieval town of Shrewsbury.

An impressive choice of facilities are available at our two principal sites; Guildhall and Rowley’s House. Their convenient location, just a short walk from the town centre, allows students to explore the picturesque streets alongside your studies.

The newly renovated Guildhall building is used as the main centre for teaching and learning. It provides fresh, modern, open spaces for students, in which you will find brand-new computer suites, lecture and seminar rooms, open-plan laboratories and a spacious library.

Outside of the classroom you can relax in the student common room, lounge, fitness suite, courtyard, and on-site café.

Shrewsbury

Sitting within a loop of the River Severn, Shrewsbury is a vibrant and cultural town, steeped in history and surrounded by natural beauty. With cobbled streets filled with original and one-off independent restaurants and shops, and a broad range of pubs, clubs, wine bars and restaurants to enjoy at night, there’s lots to explore and enjoy as a student in Shrewsbury.

If it’s sports that you’re interested in, there is a good selection available: from outdoor adventures on the Shropshire Hills to daily cycles through the town centre. Shrewsbury is also home to a number of events and festivals throughout the year, such as: Shrewsbury Folk Festival, The Big Busk, Shrewsbury Food Festival and the Shrewsbury regatta; an annual rowing event.
