Course overview

In order to establish a solid base of the knowledge and skills of modern journalism, you will be introduced to the key theories, contexts and practices within this industry. The course will examine sports journalism in depth, and will have a strong focus towards electronic media. You will develop a wide range of skills, including writing and broadcasting, to ensure you have the necessary skills for today’s converged media industry.

Why Study Sports Journalism with us?

With its unique location, the Warrington Campus provides a fantastic opportunity to study Sports Journalism. A host of Premier League giants are within an hour’s drive, the national Velodrome and Manchester’s swimming complex are just 20 miles away, and the course boasts strong links with Rugby League team Warrington Wolves, who train on campus.

We have newsrooms dedicated to journalism, and you will be expected to pursue stories and develop contacts away from the classroom to assist with content for assignments and your portfolio.

Active sports journalists/lecturers are involved in teaching the course, and together have a vast range of industry experience.

Media Learning

Parkgate Road Campus, Chester

Our historic Parkgate Road Campus in Chester has offered a wide range of courses since opening in 1839. It’s situated only a short walk from the lively city centre, and provides a friendly, secure and supportive environment in which to live and study.

Our on-campus facilities include a Learning Resource Centre, modern lecture theatres, open-access computer facilities, state-of-the-art science/skills/language laboratories, a range of catering outlets, the £2 million Chester Students’ Union centre and CSU bar/club, bookshop, chapel and faith space, cashpoint and launderette.

Because university life is not just about getting a degree, social and leisure activities are an important and long-established part of life at our Chester sites. On-campus sports facilities include a fully equipped sports hall, gym, swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, sprint track, floodlit 3G multi-use pitch and floodlit astroturf pitch.

Most of our student accommodation is also on or near campus. The campus also boasts an abundance of green space, and beautifully kept gardens, which provide you with an exciting environment in which to live and study.

The City of Chester is a vibrant mix of cafes, shops and ancient walls, rows and architectural and archaeological features. The City is home to all-year-round arts festivals, events, exhibitions and street entertainment, including the famous Chester Races, the Rowing Regatta and the internationally acclaimed Chester Zoo.
