Warrington Youth Zone
You can enjoy free access to Warrington Youth Zone (WYZ), our major sports partner. WYZ is only a five-minute walk from our sites with access to the gym, sports hall, rooftop 3G pitch and climbing wall. You can even work or volunteer here and enhance your personal development.

Local Sports Clubs
There are lots of local sports clubs in Warrington so why not find out what they have to offer? Whether it’s trying out a new sport or continuing with a sport you love, we have links with most sports clubs - and if you can’t see the sport you want to do or need advice on which club to join then let us know.

Local Health and Fitness Providers
We have partnered with local health and fitness providers to offer you opportunities to try new activities or simply have fun with friends. From bowling to skating, trampolining to swimming – the choice is yours!

Don’t have time to get to the Warrington Youth Zone or a sports club? Then why not access our Playwaze app for on demand fitness classes or virtual walking, running or cycling challenges? There’s no excuse not to get active now!

Warrington Youth Zone

Our partner, Warrington Youth Zone, is an exciting, world-class leisure facility only a five-minute walk from our sites.

Our students and local young people now have access to a safe and inspiring place to make the most of their time away from the pressures of home, school and university. Facilities include:

  • Sports - a four-court sports hall, a rooftop 3G kick pitch, climbing wall, boxing gym and fitness suite
  • Arts and Media - arts room, performing arts studio, music room, sound studio and IT equipment
  • Recreation Area - a social area with pool, table tennis and games consoles
  • Kitchen - offering healthy and inexpensive meals as well as a training kitchen for courses and activities

Warrington Youth Zone runs programmes to include everyone, offering extra provision for those with additional needs. It provides mentoring support for young people on a one-to-one basis, has a dedicated area for health and wellbeing, and offers employability and enterprise development with network wide programmes and an Enterprise Zone.

As a University Centre Warrington student, you can use these facilities for free between 8am and 4pm Monday-Friday. Evening use (after 8pm) can be arranged with the University and Warrington Youth Zone.

Volunteering and Work Opportunities

Would you like to enhance your skills and personal development, give back to the local community, and boost your employment prospects? Warrington Youth Zone offers a range of opportunities exactly for that.

Job Opportunities
If you're interested in working during the school holidays, you can help to organise games, activities, challenges and trips out for five to 16-year olds as a Holiday Club Worker. Full training is provided, and your salary depends on your age and hours worked (Monday to Friday). Or perhaps you'd like to support teenagers through the summer holidays as they engage with the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme? WYZ needs Team Leaders and Assistant Team Leaders to work with young people aged 15 to 17 on residential activities, skills workshops, and social action projects. Formal qualifications are not needed, salary is dependent on the role and hours worked (Monday to Friday).

Work Placements
If you're looking for a work placement as part of your studies, WYZ offers opportunities in a variety of sports and physical activities which could act as a pathway to securing paid employment.

Volunteering Roles
WYZ also has a wide range of volunteering roles available. You can support the Junior and Senior Youth Clubs across sports, arts and crafts, and recreation, or assist with personal development programmes and employability courses. You can gain experience as a Mentor for vulnerable young people, assist in the Holiday Clubs or act as a minibus driver. Hours vary dependent on role.

Sports Central

If you like sport, you'll love Warrington. Home to one of the best teams in rugby league, Warrington Wolves R.L.F.C., you're guaranteed a great night of sport at the Halliwell Jones Stadium. Outside of rugby league, there's also football, futsal, netball, cycling and much more to keep you entertained so why not join one of the local teams?

  • Wire Futsal offer recreational and competitive sport for all.
  • Warrington Wolverines provide football opportunities to women who live in the area.
  • Crosfields ARLFC is a thriving Amateur Rugby League Football Club with teams open to people of all ages. It has clubs in the Premier National Conference Competition and Northwest Counties League.
  • Crosfields Football Club has teams open to all.
  • Warrington Athletics Club is always looking to welcome new members with disciplines ranging from long jump, road running and shot put.
  • Warrington Rowing Club supports recreational and competitive rowing for people of all ages. They run frequent Learn to Row courses throughout the year. Student memberships are available.
  • Warrington Road Club is a road cycling club providing racing, training and social club rides.
  • North Cheshire Clarion is for cyclists looking to develop their skills and abilities, both recreational and competitive, on and off the road.
  • Sport For All Centres offer netball and basketball for everyone. If you're new or getting back in to sport, you can join a 'come and try' session. For those ready to play straight away you can join a new or existing team and enter their leagues.
  • Bowmen Archery Club accommodate a wide range of shooting styles for both the seasoned pro and absolute beginner.

If swimming is your thing, Warrington Masters Swimming Club welcomes over 18s of all abilities looking for a fun and friendly environment for training and competition. Warrington Swimming & Water Polo Club provides the opportunity to develop skills in swimming and water polo to help every member to reach their full potential. LiveWire has four swimming venues across Warrington, offering a host of swimming sessions through a pay and go option of £5 per visit.

You don’t need any fancy equipment or a special space to get involved – just move the coffee table, roll out a towel on the floor and away you go.
