Student Life

Hear from our SU President, Eleanor Lewis

When I started studying at the University of Chester, I quickly realised that whilst my degree was the main reason for being here, university is so much more than a degree. The University and Chester Students’ Union provide so many extra-curricular activities, whether it be study skills and extra help to move that grade a bit higher, or joining the Harry Potter society (to name just one – we have over 80!), there is always something for you to do.

I joined the netball club, being an keen player and wanting to continue competing, but there are so many social sports to join too if you just want to play for fun. The University and Union also provide many volunteering opportunities, from dog-walking if you miss your pup to ‘red-t’s’ who help move students in on ‘move-in Sunday’, the opportunities are endless.

It’s because of the University that I am where I am now, President of Chester Students’ Union, re-elected this year to continue representing students for another year. Everything that the University and Union offer, and everything I took on board, added pieces to the jigsaw which gave me the confidence and knowledge to stand in an election and represent 19,000 students.

Your questions answered

If you’ve been unable to make it to one of our Experience Days, don’t worry! We’re bringing the Experience Day to you by answering some of your key questions.

Is there any support in place to help me as a student?

At Chester, the student experience is at the heart of everything we do. So it’s no surprise that we’ve recently been shortlisted by the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2020 for offering the best academic, practical and emotional support to students.

Whether it’s safety, support, or advice and guidance we’re here for you every step of the way. Here’s just a few examples of some of the services available to support you from day one:

Check out this video for an overview of all of our fantastic support services:

What financial support is in place, and when and how do I apply?

Yes, going to university doesn’t come cheap, but that doesn’t mean it’s not affordable. With loans and grants available, as well as University of Chester specific bursaries, there’s lots of financial support in place to help you along on your university journey.

Did you know:

  • Student finance applications are open? Why not use your time wisely and start your application now!
  • There are lots of grants available – this is money you don’t pay back.
  • As of April, you won’t start repayments unless you’re earning over £26,000 a year.

The Student Finance pages on our website contain lots of information about the various student finance and funding options available, as well as how to apply and repay. But if you have any specific questions feel free to email our very own experts: finance.tuitionfees@chester.ac.uk.

How and when do I apply for accommodation?

We have lots of accommodation options available both on and off campus. Take a look at our Accommodation pages on the website to see inside our rooms.

Applications for accommodation open from 30th March. The deadline for priority allocation is 22nd June. If you’ve selected Chester as your Firm or Insurance choice, look out for a copy of our Accommodation Guide which contains a step-by-step guide to how and when to apply.

Did you know:

  • You should still apply for University of Chester accommodation even if Chester is your Insurance choice.
  • We offer guaranteed University-owned or Partnership Accommodation

If you can’t make the live chat, don’t worry, you are welcome to contact our Residential Living team by email: accommodation@chester.ac.uk.

What is the learning experience like?

There’s lots more to studying at Chester than lectures and seminars. We like to give our students the opportunity to put their learning to the test and apply their skills in the real world. With over 95% of our UK undergraduates in employment or further study within six months of graduating (Higher Education Leavers Statistic UK, 2016-17), we must be doing something right!

Did you know:

  • Our Work Based Learning module is nationally renowned and available for the majority of our undergraduate degrees?
  • Study Abroad opportunities are available in over 300 institutions around the world?

Take a look at what Psychology student Caitlin had to say about her life changing study abroad opportunity in Australia.

What about when I’m not studying?

We know there’s a lot more to going to university than your course (although that is pretty important!). There are some fantastic services and opportunities you can benefit from outside your studies, whether that's joining a society or sports club, volunteering in the local community, or doing your bit for the environment.

Our innovative Chester Difference Award celebrates all the extracurricular activities our students have undertaken whilst at the University of Chester. So all the great things you do won’t go unnoticed!

What’s Warrington like as a town?

So, what do our Warrington Campus students get up to when they're not hitting the books? There's so much to see and do in and around the town, and with excellent travel links to Manchester and Liverpool just around the corner, you're truly spoilt for choice.

As you can see, there are some great restaurants, shops and bars which our students love! And, all this is only a short 10-minute walk away from our Residential Parkgate Road Campus.
