Tell us about your placement:

I secured it online via the University of Chester Moodle page. My placement has been coaching football and other sports to children of ages (4-12), before, during and after school, leading sport specific training practices and helping to plan and organise sessions. Enjoyable aspects of the role: seeing that all participants enjoy themselves and have learnt something new, suggesting that I have had an impact on their learning. The challenging aspects of the role: keeping students who don’t have a particular interest engaged in learning and ensuring that they are also enjoying themselves.

What skills have you developed whilst on placement?

I have developed communication, organisation and planning, leadership, confidence in front of children and adults, plus punctuality when visiting new schools.

How has your placement prepared you for your future career?

I have gained valuable experience and knowledge of the qualifications and pathways to take in order to persue a career in coaching. It has given me a great opportunity to continue coaching with the company after placement has finished.

What have you learnt about yourself during placement?

I have the potential to be good in this role if I am more confident and apply myself to the role. Being enthusiastic and positive about what you are teaching is a valuable skill in order to succeed in the role.

What were your expectations before starting your placement?

I didn’t expect as much school work or coaching not related to football but this has only improved my experience.

What advice would you give to students embarking on Work Based Learning?

Choose a placement that is relevant to the career you wish to persue, if you are unsure of what career-path you want to take, choose something that interests you or that you enjoy.

How would you sum up your placement experience?

Valuable experience of both coaching and teaching with children of a range of ages, both in and out of school. An opportunity to develop your communication, leadership and coaching skills throughout a variety of environments.
