Kristian Rozells

Programme Leader in MA Popular Music

School for the Creative Industries
Kristian Rozells

Kristian is a lecturer for the MA Popular Music degree. Bored with formulaic approaches to songwriting and performance, Kristian pushes the assumed boundaries of the acoustic singer/ songwriter by exploring a greater range of dissonance, modal tonality and technical virtuosity in comparison to other contemporary singer/ songwriters. As a dedicated guitarist, he is equally well versed in percussive acoustic and heavy rock instrumental guitar styles.

Kristian studied at The Academy of Contemporary Music where he was taught by Guthrie Govan, Dave Kilminster and Pete Callard. Following this he went on to University of Wolverhampton graduating with a degree in Popular Music and was asked to return as a guitar teacher. Kristian spent a number of years teaching guitar at various institutions in the Midlands and began lecturing at North Warwickshire and Hinckley College. He also found time to create backing tracks and help recruit students for Yamaha Music Schools across the country by performing workshops.

In 2005, Kristian released his first album of original songs entitled Shimmering Sky and continues to perform professionally.

At University of Chester Kristian teaches modules in Musicianship and Ensemble Performance, Music Harmony and Understanding and Session Musicianship.

Kristian also worked at Leeds College of Music where he taught Songwriting and Performance on the BA (hons) in Popular Music. As A level pathway leader and progress tutor on the level 3 music BTEC, he taught the majority of units on both courses and contributed a key role in curriculum development.

Research interests include the improvement of listening skills for popular musicians through new methods to transcribing, using a VLE to improve teaching and learning and approaches to manufacturing commercially successful pop music.
