Rebecca Falcon

Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Product Design

School for the Creative Industries
Rebecca Falcon

With twenty years international experience, Rebecca has a proven track record in commercial product design and project management. Rebecca has designed a wide range of products for international clients, specialising in nursery, homewares and bathroom products.

Rebecca worked first as in-house designer for a British manufacturer, and then moved into product design consultancy.  Employed directly by a Chinese manufacturer, Rebecca then split her time between the UK and Hong Kong.  Her design skills enabled her to bridge the cultural and communication gap between European retailers and Chinese factories.  This led to the design of many of Mothercare’s own brand nursery products and she assisted in the opening of a new factory in China.

Rebecca moved to New Zealand to manage a team of designers and engineers and was responsible for the product development of an ‘intelligent toileting system’.  This complex design challenge was the ultimate in user-centred design and required both hardware product design and proprietary software solutions using the latest 3D CAD modelling techniques alongside traditional hands-on model making.  This resulted in a fully working prototype complete with patent protection which was subsequently sold to a bathroom retailer.

In her successive role as IT Project Manager,  Rebecca was responsible for the IT integration and physical installation of 55,000 Smart meters across New Zealand.  Leading the project team and managing a significant budget Rebecca worked in partnership with Siemens to prove the technology.  This project became the test bed for all future European Smart Meter installations.

Rebecca retrained as a teacher in 2010, enabling her to combine education experience with professional practice to deliver a stimulating and real-world Product Design degree programme.
