Dr Sam Moss

Sam Joined the department as a member of staff in January 2014. She completed her undergraduate and PhD studies at the University of Chester and MSc at Loughborough University.

Sam holds practitioner status on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition register (SENr) and works as a nutrition consultant for the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, supporting professional female football players. She is currently supervising four PhD students in the areas of physiology and nutrition.

Previously, Sam led the programme of sports science support for the England Handball Association. During this time, she completed her PhD which assessed the physical, physiological and performance characteristics of national team players. Assessment of congested training/match schedules and implementation of strategies to better manage loading, formed a key part of the thesis.

Sam holds current external examiner roles and is regularly invited to review for a number of scientific journals, including Sports Medicine, Journal of Sports Sciences, European Journal of Sports Sciences, PLOSONE, Research Quarterly and the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.

Sam teaches on the following nutrition, physiology and psychology modules:

  • Introduction to Sport & Exercise Physiology (Level 4)
  • Applied Experience in Sport & Exercise Sciences (Level 5)
  • Issues in Elite Training & Performance (Level 6)
  • Sports Nutrition and Performance (Level 6)
  • Enhancing Sports Performance (MSc)
  • The Applied Sports Scientist (MSc)
  • Managing the Performance Athlete (MSc)

Sam also supervises student dissertation projects on the MSc in Sports Performance and the BSc Sport & Exercise Sciences.
