Lisa King

I commenced employment with the University of Chester in 2005 as a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Health & Social Care having previously been employed in the National Health Service as a clinical nurse specialist in substance misuse services.  My nursing career began in 1986 when I commenced my mental health nurse training.  

My current role includes faculty co-ordinator for international provision; programme leadership and management; facilitation, co-ordination and delivery of teaching and learning across allied health and nursing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes; module leadership and co-ordination; academic link in practice.

Throughout my career I have been interested in and passionate about mental health nursing; health and wellbeing; challenging stigma and discrimination; public health; substance misuse with a special interest in the nature, cause and effect of substance misuse on individuals, communities and society.

I contribute to a number of other programmes within the Faculty including the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) Honours Degree; BSc Specialist Practice and the BSc Professional Practice. 

I am currently the module leader for NM6172 Contemporary Approaches to the Management and Care of Individuals who Misuse Substances; NM6170 Interventions for Promoting Healthy Lifestyles; NM6308 Addictions, Themes and Critical Debates; NM7852 Evidence Based Practice.

I am also a supervisor for students studying at both degree and master's level.

I am an external examiner for the University of South Wales.

My areas of research interest include substance misuse and dependence; drug and alcohol education; mental health; health and wellbeing; public health; behaviour change; nurse education; pedagogy.

I am currently studying for my Professional Doctorate in Health & Social Care which is due for submission September 2018. My thesis is “An Interpretative Phenomenological Study of Nurse Academics’ Experiences and Interpretations of Alcohol Education within the Context of the Undergraduate Pre-registration Nursing Curriculum”.
