Visiting Lecturer

School of Computing and Engineering Sciences
Dr Nigel Houlden

Nigel is a Senior Lecturer, specialising in Cyber security, and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University. He has been working in higher education for 15 years in a variety of academic, research, and leadership roles. Nigel joined the University of Chester in 2023 and prior to this held posts at Wrexham Glyndwr University and Liverpool John Moores University.

Nigel has worked in the Computing industry for over 30 years, holding posts with the NHS, local government and numerous private companies. Since 2008 he has held academic posts apart from a short break with the ICO. He has taught a variety of subjects in cyber security and computer science, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and has been involved in the design and delivery of degree apprenticeships for cyber security and software engineering.

He is author of research articles, book chapters, and blogs reflecting his broad range of interdisciplinary interests when it comes to research and external collaboration. Nigel is a Member (MBCS) and Chartered IT Professional (CITP) of the British Computer Society (BCS) and a member of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) Technology Advisory Panel (TAP).

Nigel’s teaching focus is primarily relating to cyber security, legal aspects of cyber security and data privacy across undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Chester. In addition, he supervises final year and dissertation project students in these areas.

Nigel’s research interests cover a range of cyber security and data privacy related topics from the technology to the legal and ethical implications of cyber and data privacy.

Nigel has supervised several PhD students to successful completion and has also acted as examiner for doctoral candidates.
