Professor Jackie Potter
Dean, Academic Innovation
Professor Jackie Potter is Dean of Academic Innovation. She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE), a Senior Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) and the Chair of the national UK network, Heads of Educational Development Group (HEDG). She is a Visiting Professor at Oxford Brookes University.
Jackie takes the lead at Chester on delivering the Citizen Student Education Plan and leading the Centre for Academic Innovation and Development. She works with colleagues across UoC, from sector bodies and peer networks to ensure all Chester’s staff are able to deliver engaging, flexible curricula and learning experiences. She offers consultancy to support high quality learning, academic staff development and on educational and organisational change processes.
Jackie was a researcher in Arctic plant ecology for five years before starting her teaching career as a lecturer in environmental science. Her first full time job leading educational development was at Trinity College Dublin. She has been leading on academic practice, educational development and change in universities in the UK since 2009.
Jackie supervises PhD and EdD students interested in higher education studies, academic identity and educational development. She maintains links to environmental science through guest lecturing. She works as an external examiner for other universities assuring the standards and quality of courses for academic staff to develop their teaching.
Jackie mentors and supervises educational research and she is involved in a number of cross-institutional research projects. Areas of current interest and activity include: educational development centres, on-boarding for staff new to higher education, developing and evidencing teaching expertise, inclusive assessment, staff-student publishing partnerships and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Jackie Potter holds a PhD from the University of Manchester, a BSc from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning from the University of Liverpool. She is a qualified coach and works with people in the higher education sector to achieve workplace success.
