Teaching bursaries and Scholarships

Core and PGCE Lead School Partner Route Scholarships and Bursaries

Bursaries are available for a variety of subjects to encourage graduates to enter the teaching profession. You do not need to apply for a bursary; if you’re eligible, you’ll automatically receive it. Applicants may be eligible for a bursary if they have a 1st, 2:1, 2:2, PhD or Master’s.

If you train to teach Chemistry, Computing, Mathematics or Physics, you could receive a tax-free bursary of up to £28,000.

Alternatively, if you’re interested in teaching Languages, bursaries of up to £25,000 are available for trainees in French, German and Spanish. 

If you’re interested in teaching Geography, you may be eligible to receive a bursary of up to £25,000.

For those who’d like to train to teach Biology or Design and Technology, there are bursaries of £25,000 available, and a bursary of £10,000 for training to teach English Art and Design, Music and PE.

These are just a few of the various forms of financial support available for eligible graduates on postgraduate routes into teacher training. However, funding amounts will vary depending on the subject you intend to teach and your degree classification or highest relevant academic qualification.

Please be aware that all bursaries are subject to conditions; you are not guaranteed funding, but you may be eligible for financial support. The teacher training provider will determine eligibility and confirm the amount you’re entitled to.

Scholarships

Scholarships are available to graduates with a 1st, 2:1, Master's or PhD degree within the relevant subject area. In exceptional circumstances, a scholarship may be awarded to a graduate with a 2:2 and significant relevant experience. Scholarships are aimed at graduates who are passionate about their subject, and who have the potential to be inspirational teachers.

The following scholarships are available:

• £30,000 in chemistry, computing, mathematics and physics
• £27,000 in languages (French, German and Spanish only)
• Applicants may be eligible for a bursary if they have 1st, 2:1, 2:2, PhD or master’s.

Scholarships are applied for separately to ITT and only awarded to high calibre students who pass a robust application and interview process in one of the specialist subject areas via the relevant scholarship body.

Awarded by the relevant scholarship body, scholarships come with a range of additional benefits including:

• membership to the professional body
• access to classroom resources
• continuing professional development (CPD).

If you are not awarded a scholarship, you’ll be eligible to apply for a standard bursary.

Support

Tuition fee loan

If you’re on a postgraduate teacher training course which is not salaried, you will have to pay tuition fees. A Tuition Fee Loan is available to cover course costs, even if you already have a student loan. 

No upfront cost

If you already have a student loan from 2012 or later, or if you've no previous student loans, you will only pay the cost of tuition charges once you’re in full-time employment and earning above £25,000. Loans before 2012 have a different repayment threshold. You can calculate an estimate of your loan repayments on the GOV.UK website.

Home and EU students may be eligible for a tuition fee loan to cover the cost of tuition fees charged. This is available through Student Finance England.
