How to prepare for your interview day

Interview Format - Preparation is key

  • You will be expected to have researched the field of nursing you have applied for, ready to discuss it with your interviewers. We also recommend researching around the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and current health topics.

The interview will include the following questions:

  1. Working in health and social care can be rewarding and challenging what qualities, values and skills do you have that will help you become a knowledgeable and capable nurse?
  2. Can you provide an example from your own personal or work experience that has prepared you for a career in nursing?
  3. What digital skills or resources did you use when preparing your application for the field or fields of nursing you have applied for?
  4. What did you learn about the field or fields of nursing when preparing for your interview?

The individual interview will be with up to three interviewers and will last approximately 15 minutes. The panel will consist of our experienced and friendly academic staff along with service users and/or practice staff and/or third year nursing students.

The selection day will start with a programme presentation, followed by a tour of the facilities. Individual interviews will take place after this. Please note that you may be required to stay for up to three hours depending on the time of your interview.

Where will my interview take place?

In person Adult Nursing interviews will take place at one of our four teaching sites. This will be clearly detailed in your invitation email. Please check your invitation email for the location and refer to our website here for travel and transport information. Please check with Admissions if you are unsure.

On the Day

Please arrive in good time for your interview. Our Reception team will direct you where to go to register.

Outcome

The interview score, along with information from your UCAS application, will be reviewed against the course’s selection criteria and a final decision made.

If you do not receive an offer of a place on the course, feedback is available from the Health and Social Care Admissions team should you require it.

How to prepare for your interview day

The interview questions will be based around the role of the midwife, The Code (Nursing and Midwifery Council [NMC], 2018), Government initiatives in midwifery, and will include value-based scenario questions. Value-based recruitment assists to identify potential students based on their individual values and behaviours which align with the values of the NHS Constitution (Health Education England, 2016).

  • BA (Hons) Social Work with a Foundation Year

How to prepare for your interview day

Interview Format - Preparation is key

Selection will be based on the following elements:

  1. Written exercise

    The handwritten exercise will be given to you on the day.  This will involve writing an account based on your previous experience.  You will be given 20 minutes for this exercise. Your ability to express your ideas in writing will be assessed.

  2. Group work activity

    This will last approximately 10-15 minutes.  The group activity is designed to assess your communication and interpersonal skills.

  3. Individual interview and presentation

    An individual interview which will last approximately 20 minutes. You will be interviewed by a member of academic staff and a person with lived experience of social work services and/or a social work practitioner.  Please prepare a 5-minute talk to deliver at the start of your interview to your interviewers with the title: ‘My understanding of professional social work’.  Your talk should demonstrate some prior reading/ research - here are some suggestions that you may wish to include:

        What do social workers do?
      What might be seen as some of the challenges?
      How might social workers improve the lives of vulnerable people?
               The role of legislation and policy

  3. Applicants must be able to present information, ideas and opinions clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  4. Applicants should demonstrate a beginning level of understanding/awareness of the roles and tasks of a social worker.
  5. Applicants should show a beginning level of understanding/awareness of discrimination, prejudice and oppression, and demonstrate the potential to promote positive social work practice.
  6. Applicants must demonstrate a beginning level of self-awareness and the ability to question their own values and beliefs.

How to prepare for your interview day

The title for this exercise will be given to you during your interview.  You will be given an hour to complete and return this (after your interview has ended) via email to Health and Social Care Admissions: admissionsinterviews@chester.ac.uk quoting your AIMS application reference number and full name on the email.

Please note: the group work element is not currently a feature of our online interview process.

On the Day

You will need to “join” both the initial welcome talk session via the link provided in the invite email, and then your individual interview timeslot at your chosen time.  We advise for you to “join” the individual interview timeslot at least 10 minutes before it is due to start. Once you have pressed “join,” you will be waiting in a virtual lobby. Our interview panel will invite you in when they are ready.

The welcome talk will be a group session led by the Admissions Tutor which will provide further information about the University and the programme, and there will be an opportunity to ask any questions you have at the end. The individual interview will be with up to three interviewers, the panel will consist of our experienced and friendly academic staff along with person with lived experience of social work services and/or a social work practitioner.

Please have some photo ID (e.g. Passport or Driving Licence) ready to confirm your identify at the start of your interview. 

Microsoft Teams

Our postgraduate social work interviews are conducted virtually via Microsoft Teams.

Please ensure you have a Microsoft Teams account on your PC or tablet. If not, click here. Signing up is free and it is simple to use. Please ensure you use the same email that you have given on your application.  

It is essential you book an individual interview timeslot, once this has been booked you will receive a confirmation email which will contain a link where you can directly join your interview (“meeting”) at your selected time. The welcome talk Microsoft Teams link is in your invite to interview email.

How to reply to your invitation

In order to reply to your invitation you will now need to visit the University of Chester Pre-Arrival Student Site (PASS). To access PASS, type the following address into your browser:  https://pass.chester.ac.uk

You will then be asked to sign in with your username and password.

Username
Your username is your applicant number and can be found at the top of your invitation email.

Password
Your password is your date of birth in format YYYYMMDD prefixed with the letters Che. For example March 2nd, 1976 would be Che19760302 – the letter C is a capital.

Once you are signed in you will be able to respond to the invitation and confirm whether or not you can attend.

Please note that once you have responded, you will NOT receive a confirmation email or notification.

Please indicate if you would prefer an alternative date. We will then contact you directly to reschedule your interview.
